Interview with Ronnie Camacho Barrón (ESP, ENG, SLO)

En Literaven.com conversamos con Ronnie Camacho Barrón, autor mexicano cuya obra (La Crónica Jiménez y El reclamo) hemos publicado anteriormente. Es conocido por su increíble escritura de ciencia ficción.

At Literaven.com we talked with Ronnie Camacho Barrón, a Mexican author whose work (The Jimenez Chronicle and The Reclaiming) we have previously published. He is known for his amazing science fiction writing.

ESP: ¿Cómo empezaste a escribir?

ENG: How did you start with writing?

SLO: Kako si začel s pisanjem?

ESP: La escritura, la literatura en general ha formado parte de mi vida desde que era pequeño, cuando niño mamá me leía cuentos clásicos antes dormir, después en la primaria me entretenía con las lecturas que venían en el libro de español, pero no fue hasta los 15 años cuando estaba en la secundaria que di el paso de lector a escritor.
Siendo los primeros textos que escribí poemas de amor que algunos de mis compañeros me compraron para regalarle a sus novias en San Valentín.
Me alegré mucho cuando me di cuenta de que mi trabajo podía hacer felices a las personas, eso fue lo que me motivo a convertirme en escritor y continuar escribiendo.

ENG: Writing, literature in general, has been part of my life since I was little. When I was a child, my mother would read me classic stories before going to sleep. Later in elementary school I would entertain myself with the readings that came in the book of Spanish language, but it was not until I was 15 years old and in High school that I took the step from being a reader to being a writer.
The first texts that I wrote were the love poems that some of my colleagues bought from me to give to their girlfriends on Valentine’s Day.
I was very happy when I realized that my work could make people happy, that was what motivated me to become a writer and continue writing.

SLO: Pisanje, literatura nasploh, je del mojega življenja že od malega. Ko sem bil otrok, mi je mama pred spanjem brala klasične zgodbe, pozneje v osnovni šoli sem se zabaval z branjem besedil v knjigi o španskem jeziku. A šele pri 15 letih sem v srednji šoli naredil korak od bralca do pisatelja.
Prva besedila, ki sem jih napisal, so bile ljubezenske pesmi, ki so jih nekateri moji kolegi kupili od mene, da bi jih podarili svojim puncam za valentinovo.
Zelo sem bil vesel, ko sem ugotovil, da moje delo lahko osrečuje ljudi. To me je spodbudilo, da sem nadaljeval s pisanjem in postal pisatelj.

ESP: ¿Qué inspira tu trabajo? Vemos que generalmente te quedas con el género de Sci-fi. ¿Qué te atrae de él?

ENG: What inspires your work? We see that you generally stick with the Sci-fi genre. What attracts you to it?

SLO: Kaj navdihuje tvoje delo? Vidimo, da se na splošno držiš žanra znanstvene fantastike. Kaj te pri njej privlači?

ESP: Depende, cuando se trata de cuentos me interesa explorar perspectivas poco usuales por ejemplo un ángel de la guarda en medio de la segunda guerra mundial, un niño adoptado por vampiros o una generación de zombis inteligentes que acabaron con la humanidad y ahora surcan el espacio en busca de comida.
Mientras que para mis novelas me gusta hacerle honor a los mitos, leyendas, tradiciones e historia de mi país, siendo el punto crucial de estos el contacto de humanos con los antiguos dioses mexicas a lo largo del tiempo.
En cuanto al Sci-fi, lo que me atrae es la idea de todos los futuros posibles a lo que la humanidad se puede enfrentar, pues a diferencia de otros géneros como el terror y la fantasía, la ciencia ficción es el que tiene más probabilidades de hacerse realidad, quien sabe quizás en 50, 60 u 80 años por fin tengamos contacto con alienígenas, los matrimonios entre humanos y robots sean legales o estemos fundando una nueva Tenochtitlán en la luna, con la ciencia y un poco de imaginación todo es posible.

ENG: It depends. when it comes to stories, I’m interested in exploring unusual perspectives, for example, a guardian angel in the middle of World War II, a child adopted by vampires, or a generation of intelligent zombies that wiped out humanity and are now roaming the place in search of food.
While for my novels I like to honour the myths, legends, traditions, and history of my country, the crucial point of these being the contact of humans with the ancient Mexica gods through time.
As for Sci-fi, what attracts me is the idea of all the possible futures that humanity can face, because unlike other genres such as horror and fantasy, science fiction is the one with the most probability to come true. Who knows maybe in 50, 60, or 80 years we will finally have contact with aliens, marriages between humans and robots will be legal or we will be founding a new Tenochtitlan on the Moon. With science and a little imagination, everything is possible.

SLO: Odvisno. Ko gre za zgodbe, me zanima raziskovanje nenavadnih perspektiv, na primer angela varuha sredi druge svetovne vojne, otroka, ki so ga posvojili vampirji, ali generacije inteligentnih zombijev, ki so izbrisali človeštvo in zdaj tavajo v iskanju hrane.
Medtem, ko v svojih romanih rad častim mite, legende, tradicije in zgodovino svoje države, je ključna točka teh stik ljudi s starodavnimi mehiškimi bogovi skozi čas.
Glede znanstvene fantastike me privlači ideja o vseh možnih prihodnostih, s katerimi se lahko sooči človeštvo. Za razliko od drugih žanrov, kot sta grozljivka in fantazija, znanstvena fantastika tista z največjo verjetnostjo, da se bo uresničila. Kdo ve, morda bomo čez 50, 60 ali 80 let končno imeli stik z nezemljani, poroke med ljudmi in roboti bodo legalne ali pa bomo ustanovili nov Tenochtitlan na Luni. Z znanostjo in malo domišljije je vse mogoče.

ESP: Los lectores ven que eres un escritor muy activo y publicas con bastante frecuencia. ¿Piensas publicar un libro en el futuro?

ENG: Readers see that you are a very active writer and that you publish quite often. Do you plan on publishing a book in the future?

SLO: Bralci vidijo, da si zelo aktiven pisec in da precej pogosto objavljaš. Ali nameravaš v prihodnosti izdati knjigo?

ESP: ¡Claro que sí!, de momento ya cuento con 2 novelas, 10 libros infantiles y una antología de cuentos, en estos momentos estoy trabajando en una nueva novela y tengo material suficiente para dos nuevas antologías.

ENG: Of course! At the moment I already have 2 novels, 10 children’s books, and an anthology of short stories. I am currently working on a new novel, and I have enough material for two new anthologies.

SLO: Seveda! Trenutno imam že 2 romana, 10 otroških knjig in antologijo kratkih zgodb. Trenutno delam na novem romanu in imam dovolj materiala za dve novi antologiji.

ESP: La historia suya ‘El reclamo’ que publicamos en nuestra revista recibió muchos elogios de nuestros lectores. También te han llamado ‘El próximo Asimov’. ¿Cuáles son tus pensamientos sobre eso?

ENG: Your story ‘The Reclaiming’ that we published in our magazine received a lot of praise from our readers. You’ve also been called ‘The Next Asimov’. What are your thoughts on that?

SLO: Tvoja zgodba ‘Zavzetje’, ki smo jo objavili v naši reviji, je prejela veliko pohval naših bralcev. Imenovali so te tudi ‘naslednji Asimov’. Kaj misliš o tem?

ESP: Solo puedo decir ¡muchas gracias!, jamás imagine que a pesar de la distancia y la barrera del lenguaje encontraría tan positiva respuesta a mi trabajo en lugares tan lejanos como su hermoso país, siempre he pensado que el arte une a las personas y al saber de ustedes queridos lectores, me doy cuenta de que tengo razón, les mando un fuerte abrazo desde México, espero que disfruten el próximo cuento 😉

ENG: I can only say thank you very much! I never imagined that despite the distance and the language barrier I would find such a positive response to my work in places as far away as your beautiful country. I have always thought that art unites people and upon hearing that from your dear readers, I realize that I am right. I’m sending you a big hug from Mexico; I hope you enjoy the next story 😉

SLO: Lahko rečem samo najlepša hvala! Nikoli si nisem predstavljal, da bom kljub razdalji in jezikovnim oviram našel tako pozitiven odziv na svoje delo v tako oddaljenih krajih, kot je vaša čudovita dežela. Vedno sem mislil, da umetnost združuje ljudi in ko to slišim od vas, dragi bralci, ugotavljam, da imam prav. Iz Mehike vam pošiljam velik objem. Upam, da vam bo naslednja zgodba všeč 😉

ESP: ¿De qué se siente más orgulloso en lo que respecta a su trabajo y cuál ha sido el mayor desafío hasta ahora?

ENG: What are you most proud of regarding your work and what has been the biggest challenge so far?

SLO: Na kaj si pri svojem delu najbolj ponosen in kaj ti je do sedaj predstavljalo največji izziv?

ESP: Gracias a Dios he logrado cumplir mi mayor sueño de hacer felices a las personas y a su vez ellas me han hecho feliz a mí, a lo largo de los años he recibido toda clases de comentarios positivos de personas que han leído mi trabajo, ya sea comprando mis libros o leyendo alguno de mis cuentos publicados en una revista, muchas incluso me han buscado en redes y nos hemos hecho buenos amigos.
Además, mi trabajo me ha brindado muchas oportunidades, editores de revistas me han pedido volver a colaborar con ellos e invitado a entrevistas, ofrecido ser jurado en concursos de literatura, ayudarles con proyectos, comentar y/o corregir textos, dar clases particulares y hasta espacios en la radio.
Pero lo que más me enorgullece es poder visitar otros países sin haber puesto un pie en ellos, con mis textos he llegado a Chile, Venezuela, Perú, Argentina, Colombia, Guatemala, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estados Unidos, Cuba, España, Francia y Eslovenia.
Por otro lado, he tenido mis dificultades, siendo mi mayor desafío la promoción de mi trabajo, como autor independiente no cuento con una editorial y depende completamente de mí darme a conocer.

ENG: Thank God I have been able to fulfil my greatest dream of making people happy and in turn, they have made me happy. Throughout the years I have received all kinds of positive comments from people who have read my work, whether buying my books or reading one of my stories published in a magazine, many have even searched for me online and we have become good friends.
In addition, my work has given me many opportunities. Magazine editors have asked me to collaborate with them again and I have been invited to do interviews, offered to be on a jury in literature contests, help with projects, comment and/or correct texts, give private classes, and even to talk on the radio.
But what makes me most proud is being able to visit other countries without setting a foot in them. With my texts, I have reached Chile, Venezuela, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, Guatemala, Ecuador, El Salvador, the United States, Cuba, Spain, France, and Slovenia.
On the other hand, I have had my difficulties, the biggest challenge being the promotion of my work. As an independent author, I do not have a publisher and it is completely up to me to make myself known.

SLO: Hvala bogu, da mi je uspelo izpolniti svoje največje sanje, osrečevati ljudi, in posledično so oni osrečili mene. Skozi leta sem prejel najrazličnejše pozitivne komentarje ljudi, ki so prebrali moje delo, ne glede na to, ali so kupili moje knjige ali prebrali eno od mojih zgodb, objavljenih v reviji, mnogi so me celo iskali na spletu in postali smo dobri prijatelji.
Poleg tega mi je delo dalo veliko priložnosti. Uredniki revij so me prosili, naj ponovno sodelujem z njimi, povabili so me k intervjujem, ponudili so mi, da sem član žirije na literarnih natečajih, da pomagam pri projektih, komentiram in/ali popravljam besedila, vodim zasebne tečaje in celo govorim na radiu.
Najbolj pa sem ponosen, da lahko obiščem druge države, ne da bi vanje stopil. S svojimi besedili sem dosegel Čile, Venezuelo, Peru, Argentino, Kolumbijo, Gvatemalo, Ekvador, Salvador, ZDA, Kubo, Španijo, Francijo in Slovenijo.
Po drugi strani pa sem imel svoje težave, največji izziv je bila promocija mojega dela. Kot samostojni avtor nimam založnika in je čisto na meni, da delam na lastni prepoznavnosti.

ESP: ¿Qué aconsejarías a los jóvenes escritores que recién comienzan? ¿Te gustaría dar un mensaje a tus lectores?

ENG: What advice would you give to young writers who are just starting? Would you like to give a message to your readers?

SLO: Kaj bi svetoval mladim piscem, ki so šele na začetku? Bi želel svojim bralcem posredovati sporočilo?

ESP: Aunque hay tantas cosas que me gustaría decirles, lo mejor es simplificar lo que he aprendido en seis consejos básicos que les serán de mucha utilidad en este nuevo camino.
1-Si no sabes sobre qué tema escribir, hazlo sobre algo que te apasione, puede ser algún momento histórico, un deporte, una historia de romance o los crímenes de un asesino serial, si el tema del que quieres hablar en verdad te apasiona será más fácil escribir.
2-Escribe todos los días, sé que en ocasiones es muy difícil, todos tenemos trabajos, además de familia y amigos con lo que queremos estar, pero es importante establecernos un horario para escribir, no importa si solo son cinco minutos o dos horas, debes mantenerte constante, ejercitar la pluma y la imaginación.
3-Lee e investiga mucho, no solo mejorarás tu vocabulario, sino que tu libro tendrá más sustancia, una historia con buenas bases mantendrá a tu lector atento pues querrá conocer más acerca del tema que abordas.
4-Inscribete a un taller literario, no tiene que ser costoso o ser impartido por un escritor reconocido, en la mayoría de talleres obtendrás conocimientos teóricos básicos que te ayudaran a desarrollar de forma correcta la trama de tu historia, además conocerás a personas con tu misma pasión por la escritura.
5-Al final de cuentas tu tienes la última palabra, en los talleres recibirás muchos comentarios algunos positivos y otros no tanto, lo importante aquí es escoger que comentario te sirve y cual no, quizás tu profesor te diga que cambies algo, pero si tu no sientes que sea necesario o simplemente no deseas hacerlo, estás en todo tu derecho, tu libro es tu proyecto y solo tú puedes elegir qué hacer con el.
6-Este último consejo es el más importante y a su vez el más personal, cuando escribas hazlo por amor, amor por ti, por tu trabajo y por tus futuros lectores, aunque tarden, el éxito, las oportunidades y los reconocimientos llegarán, eso te lo aseguró, pero es importante que nunca dejes de amar lo que haces porque cuando la pasión muere, también lo hace el arte.
Para terminar, por supuesto que me encantaría darles un mensaje a mis lectores, aunque seamos de ciudades distintas, no compartamos nacionalidad o tengamos lenguajes diferentes, es un verdadero placer compartir pedacitos de mi alma con ustedes, espero que algún día nos podamos conocer y si no es así, tengan presente que cada uno de mis textos están escritos con amor para todos ustedes.

ENG: Although there are so many things that I would like to tell you, it is best to gather what I have learned into six basic tips that will be very useful to you on this new path.
1-If you don’t know what topic to write about, do it about something that you are passionate about. It can be a historical moment, a sport, a romance story, or the crimes of a serial murderer. If you are passionate about the topic you want to talk it´s easier to write.
2-Write every day. I know that sometimes it is very difficult, we all have jobs, as well as family and friends with whom we want to be, but it is important to establish a time to write. It does not matter if it is only five minutes or two hours, you must remain constant. Exercise your pen and imagination.
3-Read and research a lot. Not only will you improve your vocabulary, but your book will have more substance. A story with a good base will keep your reader attentive because they will want to know more about the topic you are addressing.
4-Sign up for a literary workshop. It does not have to be expensive or taught by a recognized writer. In most workshops, you will obtain basic theoretical knowledge that will help you correctly develop the plot of your story. Also, you will meet people with the same passion for writing.
5-At the end of the day you have the last word. In the workshops, you will receive many comments, some positive and others not so much. The important thing here is to choose which comment works for you and which does not. Perhaps your teacher will tell you to change something, but if you don’t feel it’s necessary or you simply don’t want to do it, you have the right. Your book is your project and only you can choose what to do with it.
6-This last piece of advice is the most important and at the same time the most personal. When you write do it for love: love for yourself, your work, and your future readers. Even if it takes time, success, opportunities, and recognition will come. That will come to you. I assure you, but you must never stop loving what you do because when the passion dies, so does the art.
Finally, of course, I would love to give a message to my readers, even if we are from different cities, we do not share nationality or have different languages, it is a real pleasure to share bits of my soul with you. I hope that one day we can meet. And if it doesn´t happen keep in mind that each of my texts is written with love for all of you.

SLO: Čeprav je veliko stvari, ki bi vam jih rad povedal, je najbolje, da to, kar sem se naučil, strnem v šest osnovnih nasvetov, ki vam bodo zelo koristili na tej novi poti.
1-Če ne veste, o kateri temi bi pisali, pišite o nečem, kar vas navdušuje. Lahko gre za zgodovinski trenutek, šport, romantično zgodbo ali zločine serijskega morilca. Če ste navdušeni nad temo, o kateri želite govoriti, je lažje pisati.
2-Pišite vsak dan. Vem, da je včasih zelo težko, vsi imamo službo, pa tudi družino in prijatelje, s katerimi želimo biti, vendar je pomembno, da si določimo čas za pisanje. Ne glede na to, ali traja le pet minut ali dve uri, biti morate vztrajni. Vadite svoje pero in domišljijo.
3-Veliko berite in raziskujte. Ne samo, da boste izboljšali svoj besedni zaklad, ampak bo vaša knjiga imela več vsebine. Zgodba z dobro osnovo bo pritegnila vašega bralca, saj bo želel izvedeti več o temi, ki jo obravnavate.
4-Prijavite se na literarno delavnico. Ni nujno, da je drago ali da poučuje priznani pisatelj. Na večini delavnic boste pridobili osnovno teoretično znanje, ki vam bo pomagalo pravilno razviti zaplet vaše zgodbe. Prav tako boste srečali ljudi z enako strastjo do pisanja.
5-Na koncu dneva imate vi zadnjo besedo. Na delavnicah boste prejeli veliko komentarjev, nekateri bodo pozitivni, drugi manj. Pri tem je pomembno, da izberete, kateri komentar vam ustreza in kateri ne. Morda vam bo učitelj rekel, da nekaj spremenite, a če se vam ne zdi potrebno ali tega preprosto nočete narediti, imate do tega pravico. Vaša knjiga je vaš projekt in samo vi lahko izberete, kaj boste z njo počeli.
6-Ta zadnji nasvet je najpomembnejši in hkrati najbolj oseben. Ko pišete, počnite to iz ljubezni: ljubezni do sebe, svojega dela in svojih bodočih bralcev. Tudi če bo potreben čas, bodo uspeh, priložnosti in priznanje prišli. To boste dosegli. Zagotovljam vam, a nikoli ne smete nehati ljubiti tega, kar počnete, kajti ko umre strast, umre tudi umetnost.
Nazadnje bi seveda rad sporočil svojim bralcem, čeprav smo iz različnih mest, nimamo skupne narodnosti ali govorimo različne jezike, mi je v resnično zadovoljstvo deliti koščke svoje duše z vami. Upam, da se nekega dne lahko srečamo. In če se to ne zgodi, imejte v mislih, da je vsako moje besedilo napisano z ljubeznijo do vseh vas.
